DescriptionKnown as the “Painter of the People,” Rafael Tufiño was one of Puerto Rico’s most eminent cultural figures. Based in New York City and Puerto Rico, Tufiño centered local subjects in his work, mentored artists from the island, co-founded Taller Boricua workshop and art collective in 1970, and supported the establishment of El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem.
